A Message from the West Brookfield Police and Fire Departments

The Town of West Brookfield is preparing for a widespread winter storm expected to bring heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerously cold temperatures before and after the storm. Hazardous travel conditions and possible power outages are anticipated. Residents are urged to prepare now.

 

Before the storm:

  • Stay informed through official Town of West Brookfield updates and weather  

alerts

  • Avoid unnecessary travel once snowfall begins
  • Charge cell phones, medical devices, and backup batteries
  • Stock at least 3 days of food, water, medications, and essential supplies

 

Parking and Roadway Safety:

  • Do not park vehicles on roadways during the storm
  • Vehicles left on streets interfere with plowing, emergency response, and snow removal

Power Outage Preparedness:

  • Have flashlights available and avoid using candles
  • Keep extra batteries and portable chargers on hand
  • If using a generator, operate it outdoors only and away from windows or doors
  • Never use grills, ovens, or propane heaters to heat your home

 

Cold Weather Safety (Before and After the Storm):

  • Dress in layers and limit time outdoors
  • Check on elderly neighbors and those who may need assistance
  • Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything flammable
  • Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia

 

Pet Safety:

  • Bring pets indoors; wind chills can be life-threatening
  • Ensure pets have warm shelter, food, and unfrozen water
  • Limit outdoor exposure and protect paws from ice and salt

 

Home and Fire Safety:

  • Clear snow from furnace and dryer vents to prevent carbon monoxide hazards
  • Protect pipes from freezing by maintaining heat and opening cabinet doors
  • If you are able, please help by shoveling out nearby fire hydrants to assist emergency  

  responders

 

Cold temperatures may persist for several days after the storm, making cleanup and recovery hazardous. Please plan ahead, use caution, and look out for one another.
